Changes to medical program could benefit doctor shortage here

In exactly a month, on July 2nd, the student population at the University of Lethbridge will grow somewhat with the newly-expanded Southern Alberta Medical Program.

Associate Dean, Dr. Richard Buck, says it could be a big win for Lethbridge and the region once doctors finish their formal training.

“So, if you look at other campuse across the country, the data shows that if you can bring education to where the students are, so they don’t have to uproot their families and their lives, to get the medical training that they desire, then they will often stay in the area, as well, too.”

Up until now, medical students from the area would have to go to Calgary to begin their schooling and then return to Lethbridge for the completion.
