Don’t divert standing or pooling water from property to ditches, canals: Lethbridge County

Jun 3, 2026 | 6:30 AM

With the rain storm now behind us, Lethbridge County is reminding property owners not to divert standing or pooling water into ditches, culverts, or canals.

While it might seem harmless enough, it can lead to flooding and problems for your neighbours downstream.

Ditches and culverts, the County says, are designed to manage normal drainage flows, but when there’s too much water, all at once, the system can back up or overflow.

The best solution, if you have standing water, is to contact Lethbridge County and they’ll send out a staff member to assess your situation.
