STOCKHOLM — Canada’s Marco Arop finished second in a season-best effort in the men’s 800 metres in Diamond League action.

The Edmonton native ran one minute 43.11 seconds.

It was just the second competition of the year for the 27-year-old who is a three-time world championship medallist (one gold, two bronze) and Olympic silver medallist. He did not finish his last event on May 1.

Cooper Lutkenhaus of the United States placed first in 1:42.70, with Algeria’s Slimane Moula crossed the finish line in third in 1:43.41. They also ran season-best times.

“I was happy with my race, the first race for a while, I just wanted to see where I was at, and it went just as well as it could have gone,” Arop told reporters after the race. “It was my first race against Cooper – I was excited about it, and he showed how strong he is today. He is going to be a special talent.”

In the women’s shot put, Sarah Mitton of Brooklyn, N.S., placed third with a top throw of 19.89 metres.

Mitton finished behind Jessica Schilder (20.89) of the Netherlands and American Chase Jackson (19.91).
