Region continues to lead province with figures

Seeding all-but-complete for most crops here in the South ahead of torrential rains

It appears producers in Southern Alberta were able to get most, if not all, of their seedings finished ahead of our recent five-day rainstorm.

The first weekly crop report of June from Alberta Agriculture shows a 100 percent completion rate for durum, mustard, flax, potatoes, chickpeas, lentils, and corn, and only a fraction less for spring wheat and dry peas (99.7%), barley and oats (98.8%) and canola (98.0%).

“Dry conditions persisted through the early part of last week (May 25-28) and producers used the opportunity to significantly advance seeding progress across the entire province.,” said the June 2nd survey.

“As May closed, the weather shifted to widespread soaking rains throughout most of the province, replenishing both surface and sub-surface soil moisture in most areas.”

Province-wide, seeding of major crops averaged near 93 percent, only marginally up from the 92% seen in 2025.

The 99 percent average here in the South equalled Central Alberta’s numbers, but far ahead of the 78 percent average of completed seeding in the Peace Country.

The report goes on to say that recent rains notably improved surface and sub-surface conditions across all regions, with a 76% rating of good to excellent for the South, four percent less than the provincial average of 80.

Good to excellent moisture below ground, provincially, was pegged at 73%, and 75% here in Region 1, which covers Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Foremost, and Strathmore.
