A well-loved Indigenous author was in the Bridge City on Tuesday for a tour of elementary schools and a book signing.

Dr. Jennifer Leason is a recent winner of the Richard Allen Chase Memorial Award, named after a former teacher and librarian from Lethbridge.

Her latest work, Hummingbird, written in honour of her mother, who she lost in 2013, is an inspirational story with an underlying theme.

“Essentially, the book is about overcoming obstacles and barriers and always seeing the light and goodness in life, which is, ultimately, the teachings of The Hummingbird,” Leason explained.

“I love to teach children, and I love to celebrate the love and light and the beautiful things that surround us, and that’s, ultimately, what the book is about.”

Leason says her books, of which a new one is in the works, and the tours, also help to keep Indigenous languages alive.
