Alberta Health Services has issued an advisory for a section of the Milk River near Writing on Stone Provincial Park, northeast of Coutts.
It’s asking that everyone avoid swimming or wading into the river, including pets, after the waterway was found to have elevated levels of fecal bacteria.
Contact with the water, it says, can result in someone getting extremely sick, especially if the water is swallowed.
It also warns exposure can also lead to skin, ear, and eye infections, with the current levels of bacteria in the water.
