Passionate about youth in the region, a Lethbridge couple, who both passed in 2024, are continuing their commitment through an endowment fund.

Monday morning, the Community Foundation of Lethbridge & Southwestern Alberta (CFLSA) announced a gift of almost $3.2 million from Dr. David and Mrs. Shirley Hughes.

In a prepared statement, foundation executive director Charleen Davidson said, for the Hughes, it wasn’t about recognition.

“There were firm believers that to whom much has been given, much is expected,” Davidson said during the announcement of the legacy.

“They believed that helping others was the best source of happiness. They also believed that it was important for the community to know that they were donors because they wanted to inspire others to give.”

Among the initiatives started by the Hughes was the foundation’s Youth in Action grant program, which will continue to benefit from the Hughes’ legacy gift.
