Alberta’s Child and Youth advocate lobbies for more data collection on homeless youth

Alberta’s Child and Youth advocate would like to see more data collection by the Province as it relates to youth homelessness.

Terri Pelton, in releasing a 40-page report Wednesday, said she found it hard to find any provincial figures, adding they just don’t exist.

She feels it’s becomes far more difficult to know where to put resources if you don’t have the numbers to guide you.

“To be critically blunt, if we could have that first, it would make a difference, and then if we could resource that, and get young people off the street and into homes,” Pelton said in a conversation with Pattison Media.

“If they could get a place where they belong and they feel connected to someone, they’ll do better.”

A Place to Belong: A Special Report on Youth Homelessness in Alberta heard from 156 young people from ages 12 to 24, and 170 stakeholders .
