Heat, sun, rain aid in its growth

City, Polytechnic students monitor Henderson Lake for algae

With the warmer weather, the City of Lethbridge is stepping up efforts to keep algae, at bay, particularly at Henderson Lake.

Jackie Cardinal, the City’s Parks Natural Resource Coordinator, explains the organism thrives on our changing weather.

“The algae forms when there’s an excess of nutrients in the water. This can come from a number of different sources,” Cardinal outlines.

“Once the water heats up due to Summer temperatures. The sun is shining. That really kicks off algae growth along with those nutrients. So, when it gets warm and sunny and rainy out, that’s the kind of perfect storm for algae to starting growing.”

In the case of blooms, when they die, the City says they’ll suck the oxygen out the water, killing fish in the process.

Besides City staff, students at Lethbridge Polytechnic also help with bi-monthly sampling and monitoring of the water.
