Coalhurst, Lethbridge County sign agreement to merge planning & development departments

Jun 23, 2026 | 2:57 PM

Future planning and development in Lethbridge County and the Town of Coalhurst will become a shared responsibility come next year.

At a joint announcement Monday, the two municipalities unveiled a formal agreement that will see long-term planning strategies, land use bylaws, and growth studies come under one umbrella.

While Reeve Tory Campbell says the County is looking forward to the new relationship, he credits the Town with starting the ball rolling.

“I think we were open to the idea of what do we do as far as planning and development,” said Reeve Campbell.

“We took a broad look at the future. What does that look like for Lethbridge County? But, I would give credit to Council and the administration for the Town of Coalhurst for pushing that rock and saying, hey, let’s have that conversation what can we do here and how can we be better.”

While certain responsibilities will start to make the shift in the coming months, the complete centralizing of services is expected to be complete by January 1st, 2027.
