Mayor says work with other airlines continues

Wednesday, last day for Westjet scheduled passenger service between Lethbridge and Calgary

While not ruling out a return to Lethbridge or Medicine Hat in the future, WestJet will end its passenger service to and from Calgary after Wednesday, June 24.

Saying the two routes were simply not profitable anymore, the air carrier announced earlier this year it would refocus its efforts on other parts of the country.

Lethbridge mayor Blaine Hyggen says it’s frustrating, however…

“It’s multiple different communities across the country. It’s not just Lethbridge, it’s Medicine Hat,” the mayor pointed out.

“It was Lloydminster earlier in the year, as well as other communities out east. They find it doesn’t work for them, but maybe there’s somebody who will find it works for them. So, we’ll continue to work with other airlines. We are doing that now.”

The airport had been operated by Lethbridge County from 1997 to 2018 before the responsibility was transferred to the City eight years ago.
