UPDATE: Rainfall warnings extended to cover all of southern Alberta

Environment & Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued rainfall warnings for communities stretching across southern Alberta as part of a Yellow Warning that extends north to the Red Deer area and between the BC/Alberta and Alberta/Saskatchewan borders.

Heavy rain is being forecast, beginning Sunday evening and continuing through Tuesday.

The weather agency is warning that amounts of between 50 to 100 milimetres could occur before the system passes through.

‘Water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas. Fast-moving and rapidly rising water can sweep vehicles away and damage infrastructure.,” said a statement issued Saturday afternoon and expanded Sunday to include the Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, and Milk River regions.

“Don’t drive through flooded roadways. Watch for washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts,” it cautioned.

For over a week, it’s actually been northern and central sections of our province that have seen the brunt of heavy rainfall, resulting in not only overland flooding but emergency calls by municipalities for non-essential water use due to overwhelmed infrastructure, like wastewater and water treatment plants.

Environment & Climate Change Canada, meantime, says rainfall for both the southwest and southeast should come to an end Tuesday morning.
