North Lethbridge property temporarily ‘shuttered’ after 16-month-long drug investigation

A 16-month investigation into alleged drug activity inside a North Lethbridge home has now resulted in charges against four unnamed individuals, the property being fenced off, and the house temporarily ‘boarded up.’

Led by the Alberta Sheriff’s SCAN, or Safe Communities and Neighbourhoods unit, officers continually saw short-term visits to the home, the sheriffs branch says, were consistent with it being a drug house.

The investigation included a search of the property in May of last year by the Lethbridge Police Service where drugs and drug paraphenelia were seized.

Despite issuing a warning letter to the property owner, SCAN said it continued to receive and substantiate public complaints.

Just over a week ago, on June 30, they were granted a Community Safety Order by the courts to close off the 13th Avenue property for 90 days until October, with conditions remaining in place for two more years, until Oct. 5, 2028.

“Illegal drug activity affects more than the people involved; it disrupts entire neighbourhoods and leaves residents feeling unsafe,” said Alberta’s minister for Public Safety and Emergency Services in a statement released Tuesday.

“Through the coordinated efforts of Alberta Sheriffs’ SCAN unit and the Lethbridge Police Service, decisive action was taken to address this problem property, helping restore a sense of safety and security for nearby residents.”

SCAN inspector Brent Pickard said the investigation began because community members spoke up about ongoing concerns.

“Those reports, combined with SCAN’s investigative work, allowed us to obtain a closure order and put an end to the illegal activity occurring at this property.”

The Alberta Sheriffs Branch says it will continue to monitor the property during the closure.
