Twenty students with the Southern Alberta Medical Program have completed their first week of training as part of a new full-time course being offered on the University of Lethbridge campus.

While, historically, becoming a doctor was something done right out of high school or university, the program’s associate dean, Dr. Richard Buck, concedes not so much nowadays.

“A lot of folks have had previous careers, including a few folks who have been nurses before or pharmacists,” Dr. Buck points out.

“There’s a physiotherapist in our group that have decided to move on and become MDs, so that is phenomenal and we’re happy to have them join us.”

In the past, most of the schooling was done at the University of Calgary, however, it’s being carried out from the very start at the U of L, in the hopes students might want to stay in the area to practice.

The program is looking to expand from 20 to 30 students in Year 2 and move from Markin Hall to a much-larger space inside the U3T building, which housed the MRI Centre.
