Warning comes after reported explosion

Help prevent barbecue fires with proper cleaning and maintenance: LFES

Jul 13, 2026 | 2:44 PM

A barbecue fire at a north Lethbridge home last week is prompting Lethbridge Fire & Emergency Services to come out with some tips.

At the top of that list: to regularly clean the grill and remove any excess grease or fat build-up that might being accumulating in the catch tray.

LFES is also recommending you place barbecues away from siding, deck railing, or other combustible materials and never leave it unattended.

Another good idea is keep children and pets a fair distance away and continually inspect your propane hoses and connections.

It’s believed last Thursday’s barbecue fire may be related, in some way, to the propane tank after a reported explosion.

The fire, unfortunately, did manage to spread to a nearby vehicle.

The investigation into the cause continues.
