Long weekends add to demand for blood

Shortage in plasma donations, appointments during Summer months

Jul 31, 2026 | 9:50 AM

With many of us active on the long weekend, and the potential for accidents and injuries, the demand for blood and plasma only increases.

Unfortunately, Lisa Castro, with Canadian Blood Services, tells us the rate of donations also have a tendency to slow during the Summer months.

“So, currently the blood supply has dropped by 20 percent. Every week we need to make sure we have 18,000 appointments booked and filled by donors across the country,” Castro adds.

“And, we have been falling short anywhere from 1500 to 2500 appointments for several weeks now, since June 1st.”

To donate, you do need to be at least 17 and go with a short screening process which, if you’re doing it for the first time, will require you to present photo ID.

Details on the program including booking an appointment can be found on the Canadian Blood Services website: Blood.ca.
