Shang Juncheng wins first-round match before rain delay at NBO in Montreal

MONTREAL — China’s Shang Juncheng became the first player to win a first-round match in the men’s singles draw Sunday at the National Bank Open before rain suspended play.

Shang, ranked No. 270 in the world, defeated Paraguay’s Adolfo Daniel Vallejo 6-3, 6-3 in one hour 21 minutes. He will face 10th-seeded Andrey Rublev of Russia in the second round.

Vallejo and Shang were the only players to complete their match before play was suspended at IGA Stadium.

Later Sunday, Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo was scheduled to face France’s Kyrian Jacquet, while Alexis Galarneau of Laval, Que., was set to take on Czechia’s Vit Kopriva.
