21-year-old Lethbridge athlete wins gold at Commonwealth Games in Judo
Lethbridge’s Evelyn Beaton is one of 19 gold medal winners for Canada at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The 21-year-old earned the honour, beating Sofia Asvesta of Cyprus this past Friday (July 31) in the final of the women’s 52-kilogram division in Judo.
Beaton had never beaten the Cypriot in previous competitions but was able to push Asvesta onto her side, resulting in a ‘Yuko’ and a 1-0 result in the four-minute match.
It’s her second gold medal in international competition after placing first, also in the 52 kg category, at the Pan American-Oceania Judo Championship in Chile in April of last year.
