Planned Lethbridge celebration paused as PWHL’s ‘replica’ Walter Cup goes missing

A celebration that was to feature Lethbridge-raised hockey player Dara Greig and the PWHL’s Walter Cup, which she and her former team, the Montreal Victoire, won in this year’s championship series, was abruptly cancelled Thursday, and the reason why has now surfaced.

In a statement to the Associated Press (AP), the league confirmed the trophy did not arrive as expected at its latest stop, Lethbridge, and added it’s working closely with the shipping company to locate it.

While there was no verification from the PWHL, the AP is reporting that an unnamed person close to the process said the cup was not inside the container it was shipped in, upon arrival.

Greig, who is now a member of the Ottawa Charge, had planned a two-hour celebration at VisitLethbridge.com Arena, and like what’s done with the NHL’s Stanley Cup winning team, wanted to show her gratitude to her former home community by bringing the league’s top trophy.

However, unlike the Stanley Cup and the CFL’s Grey Cup, which made at an appearance at this week’s Whoop-Up Days parade and Mayor’s Barbecue, the Walter Cup does not have a caretaker when it’s on the road, and the decision was made in the past to provide the championship team with a replica it could keep.

The genuine Walter Cup, which was named after the league’s founder, Mark Walter, remains on display inside the Hockey Hall of Fame.

At this point, there’s been no indication if any police agency, like the RCMP, has been called in to investigate.
