The city says locations were selected following a review of road safety data, including vehicle speeds, pedestrian crossing activity, visibility, collision history and other site-specific safety considerations.  

Officials say site-specific designs have been developed to maintain access to adjacent properties while supporting proper roadway drainage. The temporary installations also provide flexibility, allowing the city to evaluate how each location performs before determining whether permanent changes are warranted. 

This program is said to support recommendations identified in the City’s [/media/bv0fkfa5/transportation-safety-plan-public-friendly-version.pdf]Transportation Safety Plan and ongoing efforts to improve road-user behaviour throughout the community.

Officials say this work also supports the 2026-2029 Council Strategic Plan by advancing priorities connected to a safe, healthy and well-designed community. 

The City’s traffic-calming program recently received national recognition, say city officials, earning the 2026 Transportation Association of Canada Small Municipalities Achievement Award for implementing Lethbridge’s Transportation Safety Plan through innovative traffic-calming techniques. 

Minor traffic disruptions may occur during installation, but impacts are expected to be minimal. Motorists are reminded to slow down around work crews and follow all posted signage.
