Partnership established between polytechnic and cultural centre to study Indigenous misinformation

Sep 29, 2026 | 11:39 AM

Lethbridge Polytechnic and the Ninastako Cultural Centre are working together on a project to address misinformation relating to the Indigenous community.

The study will look into both how misinformation is spread and the impact it has on communities, and what can do done to address the issue.

Being carried out through the school’s Centre for Public Safety Applied Research, it will bring together a wide range of community members.

Among those involved in providing input into the analysis will be Elders, Knowledge Keepers, community leaders, educators, and students.

Dr. Kirsten Fantazir says there continues to be misinformation and harmful stereotypes about Indigenous people in media, online spaces and everyday conversations.

‘Working Together’, as the project is known when translated from the Blackfoot language, she says it will engage with Indigenous communities to hear directly from those affected by misinformation.

From that, the hope is to create culturally relevant tools and resources, aimed at a better understanding of Indigenous Peoples.
