AHS issues alert on overnight emergency department closure in Fort Macleod

Oct 5, 2026 | 7:30 PM

Patients needed emergency medical attention overnight this evening (Monday) will need travel to one of the outlying communities to be treated.

Alberta Health Services issued a release late Monday afternoon saying, due to an unexpected clinical personnel shortage and inability to secure temporary coverage, the Fort Macleod emergency department will be temporarily closed.

The closure will start at 11 p.m. Monday evening and continue until 7 a.m. Tuesday morning.

“AHS continues to work to find clinical personnel coverage for this time period. If coverage is found, this disruption will be cancelled,” the statement went on to say.

Emergency Health Services will remain available at the Fort Macleod Health Centre , however, urgent 911 cases will be re-routed to other facilities, including the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge, and other emergency departments in Cardston, Pincher Creek, and Claresholm.

For less-emergent situations, patients can also call Health Link Alberta at 811, which is available 24/7 for non-emergency health-related questions.
