Local group helps area producers by supplying research and science

With Southern Alberta leading the country in potato production, one local group is stepping up to to help with research and potential technology streams.

Farming Smarter’s Lewis Baarda says variety and fertility research trials closer to home provide local producers a better knowledge base.

“I think we’ve been under capacity as far as being to actually able to do the scientific research. So, what our work does is to validate the things that are working and perhaps push on the things that might not or on the areas where there’s room for improvement.”

The program is also a win-win for the Interfaith Food Bank, which receives potatoes not used for studies – 28,000 pounds, as it turns out, in the last two years.
