First winter weather of season forecast to target Alberta’s Foothills region

Oct 9, 2026 | 11:41 AM

If you haven’t pulled out your winter coat from the spare closet or packing box yet, you may want to do that.

Environment & Climate Change Canada is forecasting a big temperature drop, down to the freezing mark, and the potential for some snow along the Foothills for the weekend.

However, with cold weather on the way, it’s hard to think of the fire danger, but believe or not, the latest update at 2:00 Thursday put all of the south at an extreme rating.

Our recent above seasonal temperatures and all of the wind in the last few days has managed to really dry things out and keep a City of Lethbridge fire ban for the River Valley in place.

Winds are expected to gust on Friday in the area of 70-kilometres-an-hour as a cold front moves down from the north.

A special weather statement has been issued for a large section of Alberta, which also covers the Pincher Creek area.
