October 2026 Mayor’s Column
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving long weekend surrounded by family, friends and food. It is always important to enjoy these occasions to celebrate the past and present while also looking towards the future.
On that note, the first item I want to get into this month is the biggest proposal that came out of the recent Community Issues Committee (CIC) meeting. Our Council members heard a proposal for advancing an innovative $287-million regional water and wastewater expansion project that could help unlock the next phase of transformative regional growth.
This potential water and wastewater infrastructure could support the next wave of housing, jobs and economic development in southern Alberta, including:
- Supporting up to 22,000 new homes
- Creating more than 44,000 jobs across Alberta
- Opening approximately 4,000 hectares, or nearly 10,000 acres, of land in southeast Lethbridge for future homes, businesses and jobs, including areas around the Lethbridge Airport that currently have constrained water and wastewater services
