Hospital declares Code Orange mass casualty event after northern B.C. bus crash

Nov 4, 2026 | 12:58 PM

MACKENZIE — A hospital in British Columbia’s northern Interior has declared a Code Orange mass casualty event after a bus crash involving multiple victims.

The Northern Health Authority says the Mackenzie and District Hospital declared the event but it can’t provide any details about the number of victims or their conditions.

RCMP in Mackenzie say the crash happened early Wednesday on Highway 39 south of the community that’s about 180 kilometres north of Prince George.

Police say there are multiple victims, some seriously hurt.

A statement from Mackenzie Secondary School says the crash doesn’t involve any of its students but a school bus has been sent to the area to provide support.

Police say Highway 39 has been closed to facilitate emergency responders on the scene, and multiple ambulances and an air ambulance have been deployed.

“We ask the public to avoid the area and allow emergency personnel the space they need to safely respond to this incident,” RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Brett Urano said in a statement.

“Drivers should expect significant delays and are encouraged to check DriveBC before travelling.”

Traffic information agency DriveBC says a detour is available through the Causeway and Mill Road, and drivers should use caution.
