Recent grandparent scam incident reported to Lethbridge Police Service

Nov 4, 2026 | 8:25 AM

Authorities in the Bridge City warning of at least one recent incident of a senior being scammed, in what’s become a popular fraud.

Known as the grandparent or emergency scheme, a person calls up identifying themselves as a family member in trouble and needing money right away.

Constable Rob Thibault with the Lethbridge Police Service’s Economic Crimes Unit recommends if that ever happens, to hang up, and call the person they claim to be, or…

“Have a code word with members of your family, so if they do get a phone call from someone claiming to be a family member who’s in trouble, they can say, you know, what is the code word? If that person on the other end of the line doesn’t know that code word, then you know it’s going to be a scam.’
