New Alberta licence plate hits the road

Nov 5, 2026 | 2:25 PM

Alberta license plates will have their first redesign in over 40 years, available to all drivers next week.

The plates feature the slogan “Strong and Free” with a backdrop of Moraine Lake after the province held a vote on eight designs for residents to choose from in October of last year.

The Moraine Lake design was crowned the winner a month later, with the province choosing to add the slogan “Strong and Free”.

The Alberta government adds that this new design “embraces the theme ‘Strong and Free,’ reflecting Alberta’s bold identity, economic strength and deep-rooted provincial pride.”

“The theme also pays tribute to Alberta’s Latin motto and serves as a nod to Canada’s national anthem.”

They will now become available to the public on Monday, Nov. 9 with anyone wanting to switch before their vehicle registration renewal date having to pay a “$20 government fee and a $15 registry agent service charge.”

Residents who wait until their renewal date will just have to pay the $15 registry agent service charge.

Additionally, motorists do not have to change their plate and can continue using their current one, as long as it is in good condition.
