University of Lethbridge, host of two-day discussion on MAID and 10-year anniversary

The University of Lethbridge held a two-day conference last week on a subject that’s difficult for many families to discuss , centering around end of life requests.

The focus of discussion was Medical Assistance In Dying, or MAID, which the event’s lead concludes needs to have clearer guidelines.

Nicholas Dunn is an assistant professor of Philosophy at the U of L and the director of the Applied Ethics Lab.

“It still remains a very controversial issue and it felt important to reflect on the tenth anniversary, said Dunn during a break in discussion.

“To figure out what sorts of things have we learned, what are the questions we’re still asking, and where do we want the next decade of MAID in Canada to go.”

Although planned well in advance, the conference, ironically, coincided at a time when the Province of Alberta is looking at removing MAID requests based on mental health as a reason.
