Canadian Grain Commission institutes more precise assessments for wheat damage

Jun 6, 2018 | 2:16 PM

WINNIPEG —  Updated guidelines for the assessment wheat damaged by frost, heat stress and mildew have been unveiled by the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC).

Beginning August 1, 2018, individual standard samples for frost or heat stress and mildew will replace the combined standard samples as the assessment for grading factors in all classes of Western Canadian wheat.

A news release states that “Under the previous guidelines, if both factors were present in a delivery, they were jointly assessed using the combined standard samples.”

However, research conducted by the Commission has shown grading factors don’t have a compounding negative effect on the end-use of the wheat, and individual assessment will prevent unnecessary downgrading of while maintaining high standards of quality.

The Western Standards Committee recommended the updated grading practices, which represent stakeholder input.

The changes are being implemented as part of the Canadian Grain Commission’s ongoing initiative to modernize Canada’s grain grading system and to ensure that grain is graded using the most effective and user-friendly tools possible.

The new changes are not applicable in Eastern wheat classes, which will have guides for mildew renamed as standards, effective July 1, 2018.
