WAINWRIGHT, AB – In a twist of fate, the Lethbridge Lightning beat the team that kept them from a Ranchland Hockey League Championship to secure bronze at Hockey Alberta’s senior men’s provincials.

This was the Lightning’s second consecutive trip to the AA provincials. A last second goal from Calvin Swanson lead to the 3-2 win over the Nanton Palominos.

Nanton had previously beaten Lethbridge in the finals of the Ranchland Hockey League last month.

After going 0-3 in the 2019 provincials, the Lightning finished the round-robin portion with a 2-1 record. A 5-2 win over Wainwright, 5-2 loss to Nanton and 7-4 victory over Hillmond placed them in third and secured the team a berth in the bronze medal game on March 31.

The matchup saw Lethbridge trail for the majority of time, but they tied things up at two with five minutes left in the third period. As the clock wound down, Devery Edmonds fed a long pass to James Price. Price swiftly passed the puck to Calvin Swanson, who scored with under one second left.

Officials had to meet after the sound of the buzzer. The decision was made that the goal was good, and the Lightning earned bronze with the 3-2 victory.

Work is already underway to get ready for the 2019/2020 Ranchland Hockey League season. The Lightning will host the 2020 provincial senior AA tournament March 26-29, 2019.
