RCMP urges patience as it probes malicious emails at University of Moncton

“We are working to determine all the facts of this case,” said Insp. Luc Breton in an interview.

“Investigations such as this one are particularly complex. We are working diligently to ensure all investigative avenues are properly addressed.”

Breton said police had taken a statement from the victim and have identified a possible suspect in the case.

“We have a name, but he is not a student at the University of Moncton. At this time we are focusing on the investigation to ensure we have all the facts.”

The Mounties also warned people not to redistribute any inappropriate images or messages they receive because doing so could lead to criminal charges related to the non-consensual distribution of content.

Breton said police simply wanted the remind people who may not be familiar with the law.

“You’ve got to remember there is a victim here,” Breton said.

On Friday, university president Raymond Theberge said the school wouldn’t shut down its email server because that would be letting the perpetrator win.

In the face of student criticism over his stance, Theberge said the university would reevaluate its position about using a possible backup message system over the next few days.

A university spokeswoman said Monday that a decision hasn’t been made.
