RED DEER — Home province athletes shone at day two of the 2019 Canada Winter Games on Sunday with Team Alberta competitors earning nine more medals.

It was a particularly big day in biathlon as Albertans swept the podium in the women’s 6 km sprint with Calgarians Jenna Sherrington winning gold, Pascale Paradis claiming silver and Naomi Walck taking bronze.

Calgary’s Reid Lovstrom took home silver in the men’s 7.5 km sprint.

Speed skater Brooklyn McDougall won her second gold medal in as many days, this time in the long track 1500m event at Great Chief Park. She added a silver medal in team pursuit along with Anna Bourgeois, Kayla McNeely and Cassidy Peterson.

Alberta added another gold medal in the men’s team pursuit, thanks to a Canada Games record time of 4:05.41 posted by the foursome of Paul Coderre, Kaleb Muller, Max Halyk and Joshua Hathaway.

“We didn’t know what the record was before. We expected to go fast.We practiced the pursuit a few weeks in advance, and we knew if we converted our time from indoor to outdoor we would be successful,” said Muller.

In freestyle skiing at Canyon Ski Resort, MacKenzie Schwinghamer, 19, took the silver medal in her first time ever competing in aerials.

The Alberta team of Emma Bragg, Montana Fairbairn, Liz Holmstrom, Jada Mazury, Madison Tansowny, and Bryn Topham won bronze in the team gymnastics competition.

Through two days of competition, Alberta sits second in the medal standings with 11 (4 gold, 5 silver, 2 bronze). Quebec leads with 13 medals (4 gold, 4 silver, 5 bronze).
