Parking Meter Program plugging expired metres for downtown Christmas shoppers

Dec 5, 2016 | 3:27 PM

LETHBRIDGE –  The Heart of our City Committee and the Downtown BRZ are again sponsoring the Christmas parking metre program for shoppers in the downtown area.

Christmas is the busiest time of the year for many downtown businesses who want to ensure their customers don’t have to worry about parking tickets.  For that reason, Winter Ambassadors will be plugging expired meters in the downtown area until December 23rd.

City Councillor Ryan Parker noted the competitive environment for commercial and retail business and how it was a small token of appreciation for customers to have their meters taken care of when they are downtown.

“It is $12,000 that we allocate for through the Heart of our City and the Downtown BRZ helps in allocating and making sure the program is a success.”

Parker noted the city also runs the program in the summer time, in the months of July and August.

Winter Ambassadors walk through out the downtown area, plugging expired meters and leaving a greeting on vehicle windshields, wishing customers a Merry Christmas.

This is the eighth year for the program and in past years, it was not unusual for more than 8,000 meters to be plugged with coins during the season.
