Canada Better Prepared for Second Wave of Syrian Immigrants

Aug 30, 2016 | 7:11 AM

VANCOUVER – Many immigrant support groups say welcoming a second wave of Syrian refugees to Canada this fall will be an easier task because of groundwork laid last year.

About 30,000 Syrian refugees have already come to Canada since last November, and about 6000 more are expected to arrive in the coming months, although government officials have not provided details on timing.

Chris Friesen with B-C’s Immigrant Services Society says groups such as his are in a much better position to help the newcomers now than they were last year.

He says the groups have learned a lot of lessons, including what is needed in terms of education and housing for the refugees.

But Debbie Douglas with the Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants says there’s still work to be done on helping newcomers to Canada in the long-term.

She says there’s a need for childcare spaces and school resources because so many young children are included among the refugee families.
