Some facts about Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson

VANCOUVER — A sketch of Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, who is also an outspoken climate crusader:

Born: Sept. 18, 1964, in North Vancouver (age: 52).

Professional background: He started an organic farm in B.C.’s Lower Mainland before co-founding Happy Planet, an organic fruit juice company.

Political experience: One incomplete term as the NDP legislature member for Vancouver-Fairview, beginning in 2005. He resigned to run for mayor of Vancouver. Won election as mayor in 2008. He says he intends to run again in the 2018 election.

Family: Separated though not divorced from his wife Amy, with whom he has four children. Robertson is dating Chinese singer-songwriter Wanting Qu, whose mother faces the death penalty on corruption charges stemming from her time as a municipal official in China.

Notable career moment: Hosting the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver.

Did you know: Robertson and his wife Amy sailed across the Pacific Ocean in the late 1980s on a sailboat named Shoeless Joe. Robertson is also related to renowned Canadian physician Norman Bethune, who is lionized in China for his service to the Communist country during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The mayor’s full name is Gregor Angus Bethune Robertson, after his grandmother’s famous cousin.
