City of Lethbridge approves $150,000 to expand Downtown BRZ Clean Sweep Program
LETHBRIDGE – It’s an issue that has sparked vigorous debate for and against the dispensing of free needles and other drug paraphernalia to users of illicit drugs in the city.
The never-ending piles of needle debris on streets, in alleys, parks, underpasses, yards, homes, restaurants and public bathrooms, etc. affecting everyone from parents worried their children will inadvertently get stuck with a sharp on playgrounds and in parks, to tourists visiting the city, to the general public and of course the users themselves.
The City of Lethbridge says it’s hearing the escalating public concerns and the hazards those discarded needles present to those who aren’t users.
At Monday’s meeting, council voted 7-2 to allow for the expansion of the Downtown BRZ (Business Revitalization Zone) Clean Sweep program, and to enhance current Mobile and Outreach services by using up to $150,000 in provincial funding from the Outreach Support Services Initiative (OSSI).
