Liberal MPs arrive in Saguenay, Que., today for a caucus retreat where they will prepare for a year of tough choices as the not-so-fledgling government figures out how to make good on its long list of promises. “(We will) talk about the challenges and the opportunities that come when we are responsible about the trust Canadians placed in us to serve them well in the coming years,” Trudeau said Tuesday in Barrie, Ont.

FEDS’ ECONOMIC ADVISERS TO MEET MORNEAU 

A team of advisers recruited to help resurrect Canada’s sagging economic growth is set to meet Finance Minister Bill Morneau in Toronto today. The meeting follows data showing that in May the economy contracted 0.6 per cent that month, in large part due to the Alberta wildfires.

STUDY CASTS DOUBTS ON CANADA’S LNG EXPORTS

A new study is raising doubts about the environmental benefits of Canada’s ambitions to export liquefied natural gas. The C.D. Howe Institute says while Canada’s LNG exports could reduce carbon emissions in parts of Asia, they would likely increase emissions in most other potential markets. The study comes as B.C.’s hope of a thriving LNG export market are fading, with several projects recently shelved.

QUEBEC ELECTION-NIGHT SHOOTER FOUND GUILTY

A jury has convicted Quebec’s 2012 election-night shooter of second-degree murder in the death of a lighting technician — and found him guilty of three counts of attempted murder. Richard Henry Bain, 65, faces a sentence of life imprisonment with no possibility of parole for at least 10 years. Sentencing arguments are scheduled for early September.

TRIAL STARTS FOR ACTIVIST WHO GAVE WATER TO SLAUGHTER-BOUND PIGS 

The trial for an Ontario animal rights activist begins today as she fights a mischief charge after giving water to pigs inside a truck on their way to a slaughterhouse last summer. Anita Krajnc was charged after the pigs’ owner filed a complaint with police shortly after the incident in June 2015 in Burlington, Ont.

MORE CANADIAN OLYMPIANS ARRIVE HOME TODAY

More Canadian Olympians are scheduled to return home today from Brazil. Several arrived home Tuesday to a hero’s welcome as flag-waving fans clamoured for autographs and cheering family members offered up homecoming hugs.

WAXMAN, SITTLER, BEKER AMONG WALK OF FAME INDUCTEES

Six notable Canadians have been named to Canada’s Walk of Fame in Toronto. They include entertainer Al Waxman, who died in 2001. The others are NHL Hall of Famer Darryl Sittler, singer-songwriter Corey Hart, actor-director Jason Priestley, filmmaker Deepa Mehta, and veteran fashion entrepreneur and journalist Jeanne Beker.
