Taking to the Streets (Alive) to Help for the Holidays

Dec 1, 2016 | 8:57 AM

LETHBRIDGE – Holiday donation season is in full swing and Streets Alive Mission is looking to collect goods and funds for the city’s most vulnerable.

On Wednesday (Nov. 30) local businesses delivered food and other items for the second annual Food Drive November Business Challenge.

Ken Kissick, CEO of Streets Alive Mission says that the contributions from participating businesses doubles donations from the 2015 challenge.

“I think it is difficult for the general public to understand the scope of Streets Alive. We aren’t a full food bank we are just there to fill in the gaps where people cannot get access to the food banks. The businesses donation will last us six months so it is absolutely exciting to get it.”

Kissick says that with 13 major programs covering everything from housing to mobile food to medical assistance, the not-for-profit helps an average of 100 clients per day.

Last year alone, Streets Alive Mission provided 2,983 full sets of clothing to people in need, as well as 50,000 sandwiches for those living on the streets or in the shelter and low-income hotels in downtown Lethbridge.
To meet the demand for goods and services Streets Alive will be hosting the Heralding Hope Festival on Saturday, Dec. 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m at the agency’s downtown location.

The family friendly volunteer and supporter event is focused on starting the holiday season by giving back.

The public is encouraged to volunteer their time to help prepare holiday treats to be distributed among the less fortunate, and to donate toward specific everyday items.

Festivities at the Heralding Hope Festival 2016 will include:

– Filling Stuff-n-a-Sock kits for distributing to those in need, $20 per sock, pick the stuff to fill your sock from supplies provided by Streets Alive Mission.
– Lighting the Tree of Hope – help light the tree by purchasing bulbs, $10 each.
