Child abuse case on the verge of resolution

LETHBRIDGE – An alleged case of child abuse is expected to be resolved later this month, according to the defence lawyer for the accused.

The matter involving a 32-year-old man who cannot be named to protect the identity of the child, appeared in court Friday, Mar. 2, with defence counsel Vincent Guinan, asking for an adjournment to Mar. 23, at which time they intend to enter a plea.

“We’ll resolve the matter on that day,” added Guinan.

During a previous appearance, Guinan noted that they have waived his client’s Jordan rights, which ensure a case proceeds within a reasonable amount of time.

The man faces charges of assault causing bodily harm and failing to provide the necessaries of life.

Those stem from an anonymous tip that came to the Lethbridge Police Service on Sept. 21, 2017, which indicated that a two-year-old child may be in danger.

Police conducted a welfare check with assistance from Child and Family Services, saying they found visible injuries to the boy’s face and neck. They noted that additional injuries were discovered all over the child’s body during an examination at the Chinook Regional Hospital.

In a media release, police say the mother of the child informed them that he had fallen, but medical staff determined the injuries were not consistent with a fall.

The mother faces charges of assault and failing to provide the necessaries of life and is scheduled to return to court on Mar. 23, as well. Her lawyer has stated that they are waiting for a resolution in the man’s case, saying that outcome will likely impact how they plan to proceed.
