Canada Post Negotiations with CUPW in Holding Pattern

OTTAWA:  The Canadian Union of Postal Workers says they are trying to avoid another strike vote, as contract talks with Canada Post remain stalled.

CUPW president Mike Palecek says he’s worried the Crown corporation is simply trying to run out the clock, with the current strike mandate set to expire on August 25th.

Mike Palecek says once the mandate expires, Canada Post management could unilaterally impose changes in working conditions and the union would be unable to respond.

The union intends to propose solutions that would make it possible to continue talks without having to take perpetual strike votes.

Canada Post says it has offered modest wage increases and a proposal aimed at securing the long-term sustainability of the postal workers’ pension plan, whereby new hires would get a less-generous, defined contribution plan while existing workers keep their defined benefits plan.

But it says the union is rejecting the pension proposal and insisting on one-billion dollars worth of demands that are simply not affordable.
