New programs and a new school to begin year for Lethbridge SD No. 51

LETHBRIDGE – It’s going to be a busy week for staff in Lethbridge School District No. 51, as they prepare for more than 11,000 students to return Sept. 5.

“As the excitement builds, for sure, we’ve got staff starting (this) week, and they’re in for the full week engaging in preparation as well as some professional learning,” superintendent Cheryl Gilmore said.

One of the biggest changes is on the west side, with the opening of the brand new Coalbanks Elementary School.

“That school is ready to go and staffed… another beautiful facility,” Gilmore said. A grand opening ceremony is set for Sept. 8.

Gilmore also said three years of work on Wilson Middle School will be complete, or at least nearly so, in time for the beginning of classes. She said staff will be very proud of the facility she described as “amazing.”

A flurry of other renovations took place over the summer. Gilmore said not all are complete, but she doesn’t expect any significant disruptions.

New programs this year include a second French immersion program, based out of Nicholas Sheran Elementary School, to serve kids on the west side, while Coalbanks will offer an optional Islamic culture and language study program, one period per day.
