New Chief and Council elected for Blood Tribe

Nov 23, 2016 | 12:32 AM

STANDOFF –  It was well after midnight before the final ballots were counted and winners were declared in the Blood Tribe 2016 election of a new Chief and Council for the largest reserve in Canada

Initial results show Roy Fox captured the position of Chief, well ahead of the other five candidates. Fox garnered 1326 votes, followed by Jordan Mathew Head (616), Shannon Anndrea Wells (514), Wallace Mountain Horse and Christopher Shade.

Fox will replace outgoing Chief Charles Weasel Head, who was first elected Chief in 2012, and was re-elected to the position in two successive Tribal elections.  He chose not to seek re-election in 2016.

The list of those who put their names forward for the twelve Blood Tribe Council positions was the largest on record at 115.  Of that number, the following twelve names are initial Councillors-elect, in order of those who received the most votes (the letter “I” indicates an incumbent).

Floyd Peter Big Head
Joanne Lemieux
Dorothy Theresa First Rider
Lance Allen Tail Feathers (I)
Marcel Patrick Weasel Head (I)
Timothy Allen Tail Feathers
Kirby Dean Many Fingers
Martin Heavy Head
Kyla Deann Crow Spreads His Wings
Franklyn White Quills (I)
Leanne Robin Little Bear
Henry Shade

As with many elections, there were a few glitches along the way. Polling stations were set up at two locations in Standoff, as well as in Lethbridge and Calgary.  There was a time lag after polls closed as the Lethbridge ballots had to be delivered to Standoff for counting and a malfunction in one tabulating machine forced election staff to hand feed more than 200 ballots into another machine.

The election results will be official upon notice from the Returning Officer.
