LETHBRIDGE — It’s a weekend for dog owners — and dog lovers — in the Lethbridge area, but also to help those in need.

Lethbridge and District Kennel Club is holding its annual Obedience and Conformation shows. More than 300 dogs will be taking part each day, in front of an audience of as many as 500, according to Evelen Sera with the kennel club.

“People enjoy dog-types of events,” Sera said, explaining how the different events will unfold. “We are doing what we call breed competition, which is the individual breeds that are being judged according to the breed standards set down by the Canadian Kennel Club.

“Those dogs then work towards the end of the day, and narrowing down the winners, right through to the top seven dogs and then on to best in show, best puppy in show, and best baby puppy in show.”

The Obedience Trials will also see competition, as well as the Rally Obedience event. Events will be held Friday, Nov. 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 19 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

In addition the Lethbridge and District Kennel Club is continuing to sponsor service dogs, in conjuntion with Guide Dogs of Canada and the Lions Club. Sera said their efforts have raised more than $174,000 since 1994.
