Red Deer MLA targeted by fake Facebook account

Nov 14, 2016 | 4:18 AM

RED DEER – Red Deer South MLA Barb Miller is moving on after being the subject of a fake Facebook account.

The fake page featured several posts made to look like they came from Miller, one coming soon after Donald Trump won the U.S. presidential election.

“I am so disappointed in America. He will approve Keystone and we do not need more pipelines,” the post read.

Many who read this and other posts on the page replied with angry, profanity-filled comments toward the MLA and the NDP Government.

Friday morning, Miller issued a statement through her actual Facebook account.

“I would like to warn everyone about a FAKE Barb Miller MLA Red Deer South Facebook page,” the statement read. “It seems to have been started on September 13, 2016. “It is NOT my page and those are not my comments.”

Miller added that a Twitter account associated with the page in question also did not belong to her.

The Premier’s Office put out a tweet on Friday warning of the fake accounts, adding they had filed a report to Facebook. By Friday evening, the fake accounts had been shut down.

“I want to ensure you that I am working hard for all constituents in Red Deer South, and do not condone this type of impersonation and bullying,” Miller said in an e-mail to RD News NOW. She also clarified her position regarding pipelines.

“In regard to the matter of energy infrastructure in our province, Premier Notley has been clear that Alberta needs to diversify the markets our energy industry has access to – that means building new pipelines to tidewater. I support this position,” Miller said.

“Carefully regulated, carefully monitored pipelines are in the best ‎interests of Alberta and all of Canada,” she added. “That’s why our government is working every day to get them approved. We want to see our energy industry grow and prosper.”
