LETHBRIDGE – Police have charged two drivers in connection with a collision last month that claimed the life of a 17-year-old girl.

Around 3:15pm on July 25, police responded to a three-vehicle collision on Westside Drive West south of Highway 3.‎

An investigation found that a southbound Saturn, driven by a 16-year-old girl, had slowed to a stop in the driving lane when it was rear-ended by a Ford F150, driven by a 37-year-old man.

The impact pushed the Saturn into the northbound lane where it was hit a second time by a northbound truck. Police say just prior to the crash the Ford F150 had been travelling in excess of the posted speed limit and the driver had momentarily looked away from the road.

The driver of the Saturn, along with a 17-year-old female passenger, were both taken to hospital. The driver sustained minor, non-life-threatening injuries but the passenger, identified as Paige Shawna Melanson, sustained life-threatening injuries and was subsequently taken to Calgary hospital by STARS where she later died.

A 16-year-old female from Lethbridge, who cannot be named, is charged with impeding/blocking traffic. Meantime, 37-year-old Tyson Kirk Smith from Coalhurst is charged with careless driving. He’s scheduled to appear in court Sept. 20.
