Local Soil Moisture Levels Remain Average Despite Steady Rain

LETHBRIDGE – There’s a wide range in soil moisture levels across southern Alberta as we emerge from a wet month of July.

Ralph Wright with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, says that soil moisture reserves are higher than normal near Medicine Hat, but fall as you go further west, with Lethbridge maintaining its average.

He explained what’s keeping the levels where they are, despite steady rain, “Plants are greedy, they will basically use everything they can get. So as this rain is falling the plants are using it very rapidly, it’s a warm time of year.”

Wright acknowledged that the levels do vary across the region, with some localized rain, but noted that overall things are looking good for the province.

“I’ve been watching the weather in this role now for 15-years, and province wide I don’t think I’ve seen a better year,” Wright stated. “If one was to be able to aggregate it as such, there’s good and bad everywhere, but I haven’t seen this much consistent moisture province wide since I started.”
