Police Keeping Close Eye on Alberta Highways Over Long Weekend

Jul 31, 2016 | 9:12 AM

ALBERTA – The provincial Integrated Traffic Unit has extra officers patrolling Alberta highways this weekend, to help make sure you make it home safely.

RCMP Sergeant Darrin Turnbull says the problem comes when you have a number of tourists who are unfamiliar with the area coupled with people who are rushing to take full advantage of the long weekend.

“When you’re involved in a collision, the faster you’re going the more serious the injuries are that are going to be involved,” Turnbull stated. “Give yourself a chance to survive these crashes and slow down, pay attention, wear your seat belt and make sure that you’re sober.”

Turnbull also discussed the importance of slowing down around highway maintenance or emergency vehicles stopped on the shoulder.

“We all have a job to do and we want to go home at the end of the day, so in Alberta if you’re speeding in either a construction zone or passing an emergency vehicle, the speed fines are doubled,” explained Turnbull. “So make sure that you slow down, because the fines can range up to almost $950.

“Hopefully the real story to this will be on Tuesday morning if we can report back that nobody died on the highways and that everybody got to their destination safely,” Turnbull added. “That’s the real goal, that’s what we want to see, everybody having a good time, but everybody safe.”
