LETHBRIDGE –  UP-Date A 40-year-old city man has been charged in the murder of a nine-month-old baby boy who had been left in his care.

On April 28th, Lethbridge EMS responded to a report of a baby in medical distress at a residence along the 600 block of 17 Street North. Upon arrival paramedics located nine-month-old Austin Wright inside the home. He was not breathing and in cardiac arrest. Austin was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

An investigation determined that Austin had been left in the care of his mother’s boyfriend, who was living in the residence at the time. While in the man’s care, the baby began crying and was subsequently assaulted sustaining extensive, life-threatening injuries. The man initially reported to police that Austin had fallen and just stopped breathing but an autopsy determined the little boy died as a result of blunt force trauma not consistent with a fall.

On Wednesday, July 27th, Tyler Brian Hogan was arrested and is charged with one count of second-degree murder. He was remanded in custody to appear in court on Thursday.

Staff Sgt. Scott Woods, Criminal Investigation Section, would not comment on whether or not a weapon was used in the assault, but did confirm a delay of up to twenty minutes between the assault and a request for EMS on the day of the incident.

Woods said that Hogan has been cooperative throughout the investigation and that police are not looking for any other suspects.

He was remanded in custody to appear in court Thursday (July 28), with the case then adjourned to August 3.
