$26-Million Redevelopment of City’s Oldest Mall Almost Complete

LETHBRIDGE – The $26-million dollar redevelopment of Lethbridge’s oldest mall is almost complete.

The west end of Centre Village Mall, which housed a Zellers store up until three-and-a-half years ago, was demolished in preparation for new a new Save-On-Foods and London Drugs store.

The old Save-On-Foods store will move from its location at the far end of the property into a new 43,000 square space and will be connected by a passage entrance with the rest of the mall.

London Drugs will also relocate from its existing location just off Stafford Drive, into a new 40,000 building right next door to Save-On.

Bill Kennedy, the Anthem’s Executive V-P of Investment, said that the construction has gone according to plan and that the new London Drugs should be opened by the end of September, while the new Save-On-Foods is scheduled to open by the middle of October.

“Our next challenge will be to re-purpose and re-tenant the existing Save-On-Foods. It will be reconfigured, but the substantial portion of the structure will remain. It is a big building around 90,000 feet at the moment and we will probably make it smaller,” he said.

Kennedy said that along with keeping old tenants in the Centre Village mall, there could be up to four new tenants in the old Save-On and that Anthem Properties has seen interest from national and local retailers.

Other tenants on the mall property include: Dollar Tree, Canadian Tire, Royal Bank of Canada, Mark’s Work Wearhouse and A&W, along with smaller retailers in the mall ,including the Shoe Warehouse, Warehouse One, Lammlie’s Western wear, Knitting Time, Island Ink Jet, Sentinel Protection, Persnickety, Lovely Nails and Old Fashioned Foods.
